Wood Buffalo Sightseeing Patrols

5 day boat tour into the Peace Athabasca Delta, - the largest fresh water inland delta in the world. Hiking is to Sweetgrass Prairie from the delta side on Lake Claire. This is an excellent tour for bird watching, animal watching and photographers.

Day 1
Fort Fitzgerald – 30 km. by van
Fort Fitzgerald – Rocky Point – 120 km. by boat

The trip begins along the Slave River Rapids where the White Pelicans nest. This is a spectacular series of rapids with much history to tell. At Old Fort Fitzgerald, we begin to travel up the Slave River through rocky islands and ancient natural forests. This trip gives opportunity to view birds and wildlife. On reaching the confluence of the Peace and Rocher Rivers we continue up river to Rocky Point. This is a high spot in the Peace Athabasca Delta area where for centuries First Nations people lived and traveled. Here you will find opportunity for photo taking, fishing and hiking out on the old traditional hunting trail. Moose, bear, beaver, and many birds thrive here. The campsite is safe high and dry.

Day 2
Rocky Point – Sweetgrass Prairie – 80 km.
On leaving the Peace River we travel up the Quatres Fourches River and out onto Mamawi Lake and across to Lake Claire, to Sweetgrass Prairie Landing on the edge of Lake Claire.

From here is a nice walk to Sweetgrass Prairie Campsite. This site is very historic and gives many opportunities for photos and to experience life on a natural prairie as First Nations people experienced it. Night on the prairie is a unique experience.

Day 3
Sweetgrass Prairie – Fort Chipewyan – 80 km.
Today we return to Fort Chipewyan by way of the vast delta channels and will have a chance to view the flora and fauna. Of special interest are the many delta birds, on their summer nesting areas. The delta comes alive with song and flight as we explore the water ways. On arriving at Fort Chip your evening will be accommodated at a Bed and Breakfast facility.

Fort Chipewyan is the first community in Alberta and was once the richest trading post in North America for pelts and wild fur during fur trading days into Europe. The community has a wonderful museum and friendly people to meet and greet you.

Day 4
Fort Chipewyan – Rocky Point – 70 km.
In the quiet village of Fort Chip you will find the long summer days to be very peaceful and relaxing. It is a very scenic spot on the edge of the Canadian Shield and the great Lake Athabasca. Time today allows for a lengthy visit to the museum and to meet local people. Some folks may like to take an optional airplane tour across Lake Athabasca to the Athabasca Sand Dunes. This sand dune is unique in the world, with Sahara Desert like features. This natural phenomenon is a breath taking thing to see on this trip. It is also a specially protected area, a natural gift to us.

Travel later in the day will be to Rocky Point where we spend the night in this old historic site.

Day 5
Rocky Point – Fort Fitzgerald – 120 km.
Early morning at Rocky Point is special with a chance for a hike on the hunting trail or photo taking from the rock top. Some may like to try to catch a fish here and enjoy the fun. We later move camp to Fort Fitzgerald by way of Scow Channel and the main Slave River. Again many photo opportunities occur with time for lunch and rest.
