The Taiga snowmobile adventure will excite and challenge you. Leaving from Fort Smith, You will cruise out to Fort Fitzgerald and the historic Slave Rapids. Winding your way across the Slave River, you will enter the mouth of the Dog River and follow it out to the historic trail travelled by famous explorers, such as Alexander MacKenzie. Your Dene guide will ensure your safety and comfort when leading you out into the Taiga forest. You will meet local trappers and traditional Dene people. You will pass by old camps and hear many stories about the area.
There are many stops and opportunities for photos, rest and wintertime snacks. There's nothing like tea beside an open fire with your friends. Your destination is Spotted Eagle Eco-Lodge where you will be catered to with fine meals and plenty of options for activities like ice fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, photography, snowmobiling, winter survival, or just relaxing in a camp with a good book. The snowmobile adventure will give you five full days of the Taiga at its best.
ITINERARY
Day 1 (1/2 day)
12:30 p.m.- Check-in for accommodation
- Orientation
- Visit Wood Buffalo National Park Visitor's Information Centre (watch slideshow)
- Visit museum
- Prepare gear for travel using checklists
- Dinner
- Refine gear checklist and prepare for travel
Day 2
8:00 a.m.- Breakfast, final orientation and checklist review
- Travel to Fort Fitzgerald
- Double check of gear and itinerary, safety procedures, radio communication schedules, First Aid, etc.
- Depart for Spotted Eagle Eco-Lodge
- Visit local trapper at Donovan Lake and have lunch
- Visit local trapper at Leland Lake, hot drinks
- Continue travel with stops to rest and have snacks
- Arrive at Spotted Eagle Eco-Lodge
Day 3
8:00 a.m.- Breakfast
- Activities pre-arranged for the day - rest, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and snowmobile trip
- Lunch in camp or packaged lunch outdoors
- Supper
- Free time
Day 4
8:00 a.m.- Breakfast
- Pack up and prepare for snowmobile excursion to Large Pike Lake and Narrow Lake
- Rest period with drinks and snacks at Large Pike Lake
- Depart for Narrow Lake, photo opportunities
- Continue to Narrow Lake and rest
- Supper and free time
Day 5
8:00 a.m.- Breakfast
- Orientation and checklist review
- Travel to Leland Lake
- Lunch and rest period
- Travel to Donovan Lake
- Rest period
- Travel back to Fort Fitzgerald and Fort Smith
- Supper
- Prepare for travel home the next day
Day 6 (1/2 day)
